Art
Karen is a multidisciplinary artist based in Sarnia, Ontario, originally from Johannesburg, South Africa. Her creative journey has explored photography, mixedmedia painting and sculpting — each layer informing her current textile-based practice. Her tactile pieces reflect a search through light, colour, and shape to draw out the human need to create meaning.

Karen has a Masters degree from the Univesity of Edinburgh and has actively pursued learning in all the creative fields, sought mentors and traveled to England, Spain, Japan and South Africa to do courses and workshops.
Her work has appeared in Ontario galleries, private collections across Canada, the U.S., the U.K., and South Africa, and in a permanent ceiling installation in the children’s ward at the Bluewater Health Hospital for the last 15 years.
Her current works can be found at LuxFabrica.ca

Postpartum (a close up detail shot)
In Postpartum, an abundance of peach blossoms forms the silhouette of a fertility goddess in the negative space, a reflection on the transitions of motherhood, identity, and renewal. The raw silk, with its natural texture and subtle imperfections, mirrors the delicate yet enduring nature of creation. By using absence to define presence, this piece speaks to the lingering echoes of transformation—the space left behind, the quiet resilience, and the beauty of what remains.

Synthesis
"Synthesis Embroidery on Denim | Mixed Media This piece explores the journey from internal chaos to liberation. The intricate, freeform embroidery within the human profile represents the mind in flux—woven with patterns of struggle, thought, and complexity. Emerging from this turbulence is a butterfly, a universal symbol of transformation and freedom. The golden thread between them hints at the delicate connection between struggle and release, reminding us that even in our most tangled states, there is the possibility of flight."
Materials: Thread on reclaimed denim
Size: 50cm by 80cm framed
Price: 1750
