Artisan Profile

Freda Tan is a Toronto-based painter working in oil. Through her paintings, she reimagines the classic motifs of the five elements (fire, water, earth, metal and wood) as they manifest in daily life. Her paintings capture charged moments of elemental transition in ways that are at once organic and abstracted. Soft brushwork allows forms to breathe into one another, as light and gestural line carry energy across the surface. Encountering her work, viewers are invited to sense the vibrating energy of matter in motion and to feel the openness of possibility within every moment of becoming.

She holds an Honours BSc from the University of Toronto and an Honours BFA (with distinction) from OCAD University. She is the recipient of Student Purchase Award at the 65th Toronto Outdoor Art Fair (2026), Sandra Henderson Scholarship in Drawing & Painting from Women's Art Association of Canada (2023/2024). Her work has been shown and held private collections across Canada, including the House of IDEA, Victoria College GLAM Annual Exhibition at University of Toronto. Her work has been featured in "The Future Looks Bright” Collection, Toronto Outdoor Art Fair, "Curated Abstracts, Landscapes, and New Contemporary Collects" by Partial Gallery, and was the cover for Waterloo Region Fine Arts Magazine Kul Tekst August Edition.
